Description

Crackaway Barton, now divided into two dwellings, is a small building with origins possibly dating back to the 17th century. It was extended in the 18th century, as indicated by a datestone from 1732, and the main range was heightened in the 19th century. The exterior features colourwashed rendered walls and a slate roof with gable ends. There are chimney stacks at each end of the main range, with the left end constructed from rubble and including a projecting bread oven capped with slate stone. The building is single room deep and was originally a two-cell plan, which was extended to three cells in the 18th century. At the rear, there are two outshuts with slated lean-to roofs.

The structure has two storeys and a four-window range. The three bays on the left have a higher roof pitch and contain 2-light casements with six panes per light. To the left of a projecting porch with a lean-to roof is a 3-light casement with three panes per light. The porch features a 17th-century ovolo-moulded surround around a plank door with elaborated scroll stops. To the right, there are two more 2-light casements, each with three panes per light, and a half-glazed door at the right-hand end. Near the eaves level, there is a stone plaque inscribed with "John Fols of Ilfordecombe 1732."

At the rear, there is a 17th-century single light window with chamfered surrounds on each floor; the ground floor window is enclosed in a 20th-century porch to the right. A 19th-century 3-light window is located at the left gable end. Inside, there is a roughly chamfered beam in the left side room and an old reused door leading to the staircase.
