Description

SX 79 NE CREDITON HAMLETS

6/94 Bakehouse approx. 150m south-east of Winstode House

II

Bakehouse. C17. Cob on rubble footings; stone and cob stack; corrugated iron roof (formerly thatch). Small gable-ended one room block terraced into hillside. Massive ground floor fireplace in west gable end. Faces south. 2 storeys. 2 window front with door to left in heavy oak frame with chamfered surround. Ground floor window missing. 2 small first floor windows have original unglazed oak frames with chamfered mullions, 2 lights to left, 3 to right. Unaltered interior. Pitched stone floor and large oak crossbeam, chamfered with scroll stops. Enormous granite fireplace with oak lintel contains large bread oven in left side and a curious arrangement of unknown function in the right side comprising 2 round headed arches at floor level with rising flues and high inside the chimney a large, blocked opening. Although the first floor structure has collapsed to right of the stack there is no sign of an internal stair, but there is a first floor door through the east gable. 2 bay roof with A-frame truss and pegged, lap-jointed collar. This small C17 bakehouse with apparently separate accommodation above is a remarkable survival.
