Description
This building is a bakehouse located approximately 150 meters southeast of Winstode House, dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of cob on rubble footings, with a stone and cob stack, and has a corrugated iron roof that was formerly thatched. The bakehouse is a small, gable-ended, one-room structure that is terraced into the hillside and faces south.
It has two storeys and features a two-window front with a door to the left, framed in heavy oak with a chamfered surround. The ground floor window is missing, while the two small first-floor windows retain their original unglazed oak frames with chamfered mullions, with two lights on the left and three on the right. The interior remains unaltered, showcasing a pitched stone floor and a large oak crossbeam that is chamfered with scroll stops.
A massive granite fireplace with an oak lintel dominates the west gable end, containing a large bread oven on the left side and an unusual arrangement on the right side, which includes two round-headed arches at floor level with rising flues and a large, blocked opening high inside the chimney. Although the first-floor structure has collapsed to the right of the stack and there is no sign of an internal stair, there is a first-floor door through the east gable. The roof is a two-bay design with an A-frame truss and pegged, lap-jointed collar. This small 17th-century bakehouse, which appears to have separate accommodation above, is a remarkable survival.
