Description

The bakehouse, located approximately 5 metres north of Great Weeke Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century or 17th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Originally constructed with roughly coursed blocks of granite ashlar, it has been patched and rebuilt with granite stone rubble and some cob at the wall tops. The roof is now covered with corrugated iron, having previously been thatched.

The building faces south, with the original bakehouse section at the right (eastern) end, which features a large disused end stack and a disused stair turret projecting from the rear wall. The internal walls are likely from the 18th or 19th century when the building was converted for agricultural use. The left end has been divided off to create a pair of animal stalls that are accessed from the left end. While the bakehouse was originally two storeys, it is now open to the roof, and the animal stall section once included a hayloft above. A large doorway has been created in the front for garage use, and it currently has no doors. The roof is gable-ended, and the left end remains open to the former stalls.

At the rear, a newel stair projects squarely and features a small unglazed 17th-century two-light oak window. A noticeable break can be seen between the original ashlar masonry and the secondary rubble masonry, which also includes a hayloft loading hatch. Inside, there is a large bakehouse fireplace with a massive granite lintel and a plain surround, along with a large side oven. The roof appears to have been rebuilt in the 18th or 19th century, consisting of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars, while some 16th or 17th-century principals with curving feet have been reused. The bakehouse is part of a group with several other listed buildings in the hamlet of Great Weeke.
