Description
Sandford School is a single-storey building dated 1825, constructed from stucco on brick or rubble with exposed Coade stone details and a slate roof. The school features a large rectangular block with a west-facing gable end. The front is designed like a portico, supported by six unfluted half-columns in the style of Doric order, which rest on a granite stylobate with three steps, extending to six steps at the right end. Between the half-columns, there are five architraves with pediments on brackets; the left and right architraves form doorways with 12-pane overlights, while the three central architraves contain sash windows with 24 panes above and 4 panes below. The entablature displays the name "Sandford School M.DCC.XXV." in large semi-bold serif capitals. The low-pitched roof has deep eaves, likely replacing a pediment. The sides of the building have four high two-light windows, each with two sets of mullions and glazing bars. The returns of the portico are indicated by indents on either side. Extensions are not included in this description.
