Description

Old Post Office Cottages is a pair of cottages that may date back to the 17th century, with later alterations and extensions. They are constructed from plastered cob and rubble, topped with a gable end pantiled roof. Originally designed as a three-room, through-passage plan house, the higher end is located to the left of the passage, while the service end has been extended, likely in the 19th century. The hall is heated by an axial stack at the higher end, though this room was not examined to confirm if this is the original position. The service end is heated by an external end stack, as is the service end extension, with all stacks featuring brick shafts.

The cottages are two storeys high. The front exterior of the early house has a four-window range, with 19th-century three-light casement windows on the first floor. The ground floor includes a four-light 20th-century casement window for the hall and three-light windows for the service end and inner room. There is a half-glazed door leading to the passage, topped with a rectangular overlight, and a 19th-century latticed porch. The service end extension features two three-light casement windows on the ground floor, one of which is from the 19th century.

The interior, which was not thoroughly inspected, includes a jointed cruck truss at the higher end of the hall, where there is also a rear stair, likely a rebuilt winder. The service end has rough ceiling beams.
