Description

Turnpike Cottage is a cottage, once believed to have been a toll-house, dating from the 18th century with a late 19th-century extension. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, featuring a stone rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. The original structure is a one-room plan cottage facing south-west, with a projecting right (south-east) end stack. The late 19th-century extension is set back from the right end. The building has two storeys, with a single-storey extension. The main block includes a single ground floor 20th-century fixed pane window with glazing bars. The roof is half-hipped on the left side and gable-ended on the right. The left end features late 19th to early 20th-century casements with glazing bars at both ground and first floor levels, while the right end has a contemporary first floor casement and a door behind a 20th-century flat-roofed porch at the angle of the two ranges. The front of the extension showcases a 20th-century timber mullion and transom window with panels of coloured Victorian leaded glass.

Inside the main block, most of the original plain-finished carpentry detail remains. The roof was not inspected. The cottage is shown as Moortown Cottages on the Ordnance Survey map.
