Description
Egypt Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from around 1700. It is constructed from painted rendered stone rubble and cob, with a thatched roof. The roof is half-hipped to the right and has a gabled end to the left, with a stone rubble stack raised in brick and a half-hipped thatched roof to a former outbuilding attached at the left end.
The cottage is an unusual survival of a single-room cottage with a direct entrance, staircase, and stack at the left end. A small, lofted outbuilding added probably in the 19th century was incorporated into the dwelling in the 20th century, but few other extensions or alterations have been made.
The front features a single three-light casement window with two panes on each floor on each level. The outbuilding has a small shuttered loft opening. The outbuilding is slightly recessed from the main range, and a 20th-century porch with a thatched hipped roof has been added to the angle.
The interior remains largely unspoilt, featuring a single chamfered cross ceiling beam with hollow step-stops and a slightly cambered, chamfered fireplace lintel. A dog-leg staircase is located to the left of the fireplace. Other original features include original floorboards, the roof structure with straight principals, and surviving plasterwork. The cottage represents a rare survival of an early 18th-century single-room plan cottage, notable for its lack of significant alteration.
