Description
Culverhill House is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, located on East Street in Chulmleigh. The building is constructed of painted rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a bitumenized slate roof with gable ends and features an axial brick stack. The layout consists of a two-room plan, with each room heated by the axial stack. The right-hand room is divided to create a front connecting passage that leads from the front entrance to the left-hand room. There is a staircase located close to the front left-hand corner of the left-hand room, which has blocked entrances to the front and rear. Originally, the space behind the stairs was partitioned off from the left-hand room to form a small dairy. In the 20th century, the house was extended into a single-storey outbuilding attached at the right end.
The exterior of the house is two storeys high with an attic storey and features a three-window range. Most of the 19th-century fenestration is intact, consisting of three-light casements, except for a two-light window at the left end above a blocked doorway. The entrance at the right end has a four-panelled door with an overlight and a rusticated surround. Inside, the 19th-century joinery is largely intact, including a 19th-century winder staircase and an early 19th-century semi-circular headed doorway at the top of the stairs. The fireplace in the left-hand room has been altered in the 20th century. The roof is not fully accessible, but part of it is visible in the attic storey and appears to be largely intact with straight principals.
