Description

Lills Cottage and Windy Cross are two adjoining cottages located in Chulmleigh. Lills Cottage likely dates from the late 18th century, while Windy Cross probably dates from the early 19th century but has been significantly altered in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of stone rubble and cob, with Windy Cross featuring a rendered upper storey and Lills Cottage being entirely rendered. Both cottages have thatched roofs, with Lills Cottage having a hipped roof and Windy Cross featuring gable end brick stacks.

The layout includes Lills Cottage, which has a small 1.5 room direct entry plan, and Windy Cross, which was originally two tenements but has been completely altered in the 20th century to create a two-room plan with a single-storey extension at the rear. Together, the cottages form an L-shaped plan, with Windy Cross adjoining the rear left-hand corner of Lills Cottage.

The exterior of the cottages is two storeys high. Lills Cottage has a two-window range with 19th-century two-light casements on each floor, featuring three panes per light, except for the left upper storey window, which has two panes per light. It has a hipped thatch roof over the porch and a late 19th-century six-panelled door, with the upper four panels glazed. Windy Cross has a three-window range, primarily featuring late 19th or early 20th-century fenestration with two-light casements, each having two panes per light. The central window retains square leaded panes, while the two ground floor windows flanking the 20th-century door are modern insertions in previously blocked doorways. The interior of Windy Cross has been entirely altered in the 20th century, while Lills Cottage has not been inspected.
