Description

Hollow Tree Farmhouse is a house, likely dating from the 18th century, that was refurbished in 1872. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with a stone rubble stack topped with plastered 20th-century brick, and has a thatched roof. The original plan was for a 2-room house facing south, with a central staircase and a stack on the right (east) end. The front has a symmetrical arrangement of three windows from the late 19th century, featuring casements with glazing bars. The outer windows are 2-light, and the central first-floor window is a 3-light over the central door. A late 19th-century gabled porch, built of cream-coloured machine brick with a slate roof, has been added. The outer arch of the porch is a plain 4-centred arch with a hood mould, and the stone keystone is carved with the initials VT and the date 1882. The main roof is hipped at each end. The interior largely reflects the late 19th-century refurbishment, although some plain carpentry is visible. The roof was not inspected. Deeds held by the owner go back to the 17th century. VT refers to Rev. Tanner, the rector and owner at the time of the renovation.
