Description
Racquets Court, located immediately north-northeast of Matford Lodge, is a late 19th-century building constructed of red brick in English bond. It features a Welsh slate hipped roof topped with a louvred ventilator or lantern at the apex, which has a glazed hipped roof and an ornate wrought-iron weather-vane. The building has a rectangular plan with a square court to the west that is open to the roof, and an integral outshut on the east side that contains a viewing gallery over the changing rooms.
On the exterior, the south side is supported by three slender brick pilaster buttresses, and the outshut on the right includes doorways on both the ground and first floors, each with plank doors. The rear wall, facing north, is built against a stone rubble boundary wall. The large rectangular ventilator or lantern at the roof's apex features timber louvred sides, a glazed hipped roof, and an ornate wrought-iron weather-vane with scroll brackets.
Inside, the court has rendered walls and is open to the roof, which is supported by queen-post trusses and features a boarded ceiling with a lantern at the center. The viewing gallery on the east side includes large rectangular openings fitted with wire mesh grilles. This building is an unusually intact example of a Victorian racquets court.
