Description

Exeter Grammar School was built in 1878-1880 and designed by William Butterfield. It is a large, L-shaped building constructed of red brick with decorative blue brick diapering, stone detailing, and a slate roof. The west wing is a two-story block, housing a hall on the upper floor. This section features a four-light mullion and transom window set within a gable on the left, and four three-light mullion windows with flat heads to the right. Adjacent to this is a taller block, rising to five stories and featuring a dormer. It has a series of mullion windows. The other arm of the L-shape extends at a right angle and is situated on a higher level. This three-story section includes a projecting gable block to its right, built later but in a matching style. The main entrance is centrally located within this block, marked by a gable in the roof. The ground floor features mullion windows, the first floor narrow square-headed windows, and the top floor narrow segmental-headed windows. The school and its chapel are considered to be a group of buildings of group value.
