Description
Old Matford, also known as Matford or Madford House, is a 17th-century stone and cob house located on Wonford Road. It is believed to have been built around 1600 by Sir John Smyth, who was the Mayor and Member of Parliament for Exeter until his death in 1619. The building has two storeys, featuring two gables and a projecting porch at the front. The rear of the house has projecting wings with gable ends that have been rebuilt in brick. Remnants of three large external chimneys made of Heavitree stone can still be seen. Most windows have been replaced, consisting of 3 to 5-light mullioned casements. The house now has a slate roof. The porch features a three-centred arch with the Royal Arms of Elizabeth above it, and there is an original oak panelled door with a carved frame and plinth stops. Inside, there is a staircase and several original doorways.
