Description
The former lodge for the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital is a building dating from the mid-19th century, constructed for James Veitch and later extended in the 20th century. It is made of snecked grey limestone and features a Welsh slate roof adorned with ornate pierced bargeboards and pendants. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a porch located in the angle and a small single-storey extension added at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical east front. On the left, there is a gabled wing that includes a canted bay on the ground floor topped with a lead-clad hipped roof with a valance. The windows are moulded 2-light mullions with hoodmoulds, although the original casements have been replaced. To the right, there is a lean-to porch in the angle and an arched doorway with a plank door. The south side features a gable on the left and a lateral stack on the right, while the rear has a truncated lateral stack and the small rendered extension.
Inside, the lodge retains 19th-century joinery, including a staircase with stick balusters.
