Description
The Institute in the centre of the North East Range at Wyvern Barracks, formerly known as the Institute in the Centre of North East Range at Topsham Barracks, was built in 1804. It is a well-preserved two-storey building featuring a five-window red brick front with a pediment. Atop the building is a square weatherboard clock tower with an octagonal cupola. The tympanum displays a large relief of the Royal Arms, accompanied by a recumbent lion and unicorn, with draped flags in the background. The building has a brick dentil cornice and a round-headed doorway that is framed by a rusticated plaster surround. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, and the roof is slate. On either side of the main structure are modern wings, each with nine windows, designed to match the original style.
