Description

The Former Regimental Institute, now used as offices, was built in 1868, likely designed by G Arnold, the Clerk of Works. This single-storey building features a Tudor Gothic Revival style and is constructed from polygonal rubble with dressings, external and ridge stacks, and a slate roof.

The exterior has a 4:3:3 window arrangement, with the central section set forward. It includes roll-top copings on the end gables, kneelers, dividing fire walls, a first-floor drip, and flat-headed mullion windows with metal casements. The central section features a right-hand 2-centre arched doorway with hood stops and a boarded door, situated beneath a 2-centre arched cross window in a small gable. To the left, there are three ground-floor windows and two first-floor windows, along with a small gable.

The right-hand section has a central 3-light window flanked by 2-light transom windows and a small gable above. It also includes a low basement doorway with small lights on either side, and a first-floor window with cusped heads. The left-hand section has a right-hand 2-centre arched doorway with a label mould beneath a sunken quatrefoil panel, and 3-light transom windows. The left-hand return features a central external stack, an inserted doorway to the front, and a rear first-floor cross window.

At the rear, there are external stacks on the left-hand section and a short central wing with a cross gable. Inside, the building has an open well stair from the entrance with metal balusters, and a large first-floor room in the right-hand section with an arch-braced roof.

Historically, this institute was built in a style similar to the nearby Officers' barracks and was established to provide educational and recreational activities for the garrison, aiming to reduce alcohol consumption. It is one of the oldest institutes in an English barracks.
