Description
The Former North West Gunners Barracks, also known as Building 11 at Wyvern Barracks, is an artillery gunners' barracks that was built in 1806 by James Wyatt for the Ordnance Board. It is constructed of rendered brick and features a slate hipped roof with a single-depth plan. The building is two stories high and has a seven-window range. The plain inner front faces the former square and includes a doorway located three windows from the west end, which has a plate-glass overlight and a 20th-century door. The ground floor has 6/6-pane sashes, while the first floor features 8/8-pane sashes, with the earlier ones lacking horns. The outer side of the building is similar in design. The brick inner return to the former main entrance has a central doorway flanked by sashes on either side and above, along with a 20th-century verandah.
Inside, the building was altered in the mid-20th century, and a dogleg stair leads from the entrance. Historically, this barracks was one of a pair designed for Royal Artillery gunner/drivers, alongside Building 1, which formed the southern perimeter of the former artillery barracks. Originally, the structure was L-shaped with an officers' section that flanked the entrance, but this section has since been demolished. Despite the alterations, the building remains part of the most complete small artillery barracks from the Napoleonic War, which, along with the former officers' range opposite, defines the central parade square and the original layout of the barracks.
