Description
The Former South East Gunners Barracks (Building 1) at Wyvern Barracks is an artillery gunner's barracks built in 1806 by James Wyatt for the Ordnance Board. The structure is made of rendered brick and features a slate hipped roof, with a single-depth plan.
The building is two stories high and has a seven-window range. The plain front faces a former square and includes a doorway located three windows from the west, which has a plate-glass overlight and a 20th-century door. The ground floor has 6/6-pane sashes, while the first floor features 8/8-pane sashes, with the earlier windows lacking horns. The opposite side mirrors this design. The inner return of the former main entrance has a central doorway flanked by sashes, with a 20th-century verandah above.
Inside, the building has been altered in the mid-20th century, with dogleg stairs leading from the entrance. Historically, this barracks was one of a pair designed for Royal Artillery gunner/drivers, along with Building 11, which formed the southern perimeter of the former artillery barracks. Originally, the building was L-shaped with an officers' section next to the entrance, which has since been demolished. Despite the alterations, it remains one of the most complete small artillery barracks from the Napoleonic War, defining the central parade square and the original layout of the barracks alongside the former officer's range opposite.
