Description

Matford House is a house that has been converted into a convent, built around 1840 with alterations made in the late 19th century and late 20th century. The building is finished in stucco and features a slate hipped roof with deep bracketed eaves, along with rendered stacks topped with yellow clay pots.

The house has a double-depth plan with a central entrance on the southwest front, two large bays on the northwest garden front, and service wings extending to the rear on the northeast. It is designed in the Italianate style and stands two storeys tall. The symmetrical five-bay southwest front has windows framed in eared moulded architraves. The ground floor windows feature cambered arches with keyblocks and 12-pane sashes, while the first-floor sashes have 20th-century leaded panes. A moulded stringcourse runs along the front, and the central doorway has a cambered arch with a canopy supported by large console brackets, along with panelled reveals and a panelled and glazed door.

The northwest garden front has a 3:1:3 bay arrangement with an elaborate eaves cornice and a stringcourse that continues around two large two-storey canted bays, which have similar window styles to those at the front. To the left, there is a set-back two-bay service wing with replaced windows.

Inside, the principal rooms feature moulded ceiling cornices, chimneypieces, and panelled doors. There is a late 19th-century staircase with large Jacobethan newels, a cast-iron balustrade, and a heavy moulded handrail, along with servants' stairs that have stick balusters and a column newel. A chapel was formed on the first floor in the late 20th century. Matford House is part of a group of mid-19th-century stuccoed villas.
