Description

Bridge Mews is a house, likely built in the mid-19th century. It features plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or brick stacks, and one Rolle Estate chimney pot. The roof is thatched, with tiles on the outshot. The building has a three-room plan and is oriented gable end onto the street to the south, with its long window front facing west. The front two rooms have right-side lateral stacks, while the rear room has a stack at the rear left corner. The main house is two storeys high, with a two-storey service outshot at the rear. The gable end displays a canted bay window on both the ground and first floors, with the upper window likely dating from the 20th century. The original sashes have been replaced with PVC windows featuring glazing bars, installed around 1980. The left side has an irregular three-window front with various 19th and 20th-century casements, including a circa 1980 PVC window on the ground floor right, which blocks a former doorway. The current doorway, located immediately to the left, has a 20th-century stable-type door with a contemporary gabled and felt-roofed hood. The roof is gable-ended, and there are tall brick chimney shafts. The rear outshot is also gable-ended, with the first floor weatherboarded. The interior does not show any carpentry detail on the ground floor, and the joinery is all from the 19th and 20th centuries. The roof was not inspected. Bridge Mews is set apart from the road by Budleigh Stream and is part of an attractive group of buildings.
