Description

Higher House is a house from the mid-19th century, possibly with earlier origins. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble and cob, with stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and features a thatched roof. The house is designed in an L-shape, situated alongside the churchyard, with the main block facing the village green to the southeast. It has a two-room layout on either side of a central entrance hall and rear staircase, with the principal rooms heated by end stacks. A slightly lower service block, also with a two-room plan, projects at right angles from the rear of the northeast end. The first room in this block is the kitchen, which has a lateral stack on the outer side facing the churchyard. The interior was not inspected during the survey, and it is unclear if there are any signs of earlier construction; however, the owner noted that no carpentry details were exposed. The house is two storeys tall. The exterior features an attractive symmetrical front with three original timber two-light casements, displaying glazing bar patterns dominated by margin panes. The central doorway includes an original six-panel door with an overlight and a contemporary elliptical-headed porch supported by slender turned posts. The roof is hipped at both ends. The interior was not available for inspection, but the owner reported that the joinery detail is mostly from the 19th century, including a stick baluster staircase. Higher House is part of a group of listed buildings in the village.
