Description

Charwood is a cottage dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from plastered local stone rubble and brick, with brick chimney shafts and a slate roof. The cottage is arranged in an L-shape. The main block faces southwest and originally had a two-room plan with a central entrance hall and staircase, each room having an end stack. A single-room block projects at right angles from the rear right side. The left front room now belongs to the adjoining Rose Cottage, which is listed separately. The front of the cottage is symmetrical, with two windows arranged around a central doorway. The doorway contains a 19th-century part-glazed panelled door behind a contemporary flat-roofed porch with plain posts and trellis sides. The roof is continuous over Rose Cottage to the left, and gable-ended to the right. During a survey, only the left front room (now part of Rose Cottage) was inspected. It contained a narrow crossbeam with slight chamfers. The remainder of the house is believed to contain original carpentry, joinery, and other period detail. Charwood is situated within a group of listed buildings near the village green and the Church of St Mary.
