Description

Old Budley Court is a house built around 1830-1840 and renovated in the early 20th century. It features plastered stone rubble, including some cob, with brick or stone rubble stacks and plastered brick chimney shafts, two of which have Rolle Estate chimney pots. The original thatched roof has been replaced with slate.

This tall T-shaped house has a main block that faces south and consists of a two-room plan with a central cross passage leading to a rear block. The stairs are located to the left of the passage, adjacent to the front room, which has gable-end stacks. The kitchen and service block have an end stack that projects at right angles from the middle of the main block. The house is two storeys high, with attics and a basement in the main block.

The symmetrical front has three windows arranged around a central doorway, which features a 19th-century four-panel door and a fanlight with radial glazing bars. The Queen Anne style hood above the door, supported by shaped consoles, is likely Edwardian. Flanking the doorway are Venetian windows with dashes and top radial glazing bars. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, and the plain eaves lead to a gable-ended roof. Each end wall has a segmental-headed casement with glazing bars, with the right end featuring a 12-pane sash and the left end having a round-headed sash similar to those in the front Venetian windows leading to the stairs. The roof of the rear block has a hipped end.

Inside, the house is well-preserved, showcasing 19th-century chimneypieces and a significant amount of original joinery detail, including an open string stick baluster stair. However, the roof was rebuilt in the early 20th century, retaining only the lower sections of the original principals, which have a noticeably steeper pitch than the later roof, suggesting that the original roof was likely thatched.
