Description

A pair of cottages, known as Woodbine Cottage and Priddle Cottage, were likely built in the mid to late 17th century, with a 19th-century extension added later. The cottages are constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble footings topped with late 19th-century brick and Rolle Estate chimney pots. They have gable-ended thatched roofs.

The cottages were originally built as a pair of contemporary, mirror-image dwellings facing south. Each cottage comprises a main room served by an end stack and with smaller, unheated rooms positioned between them. Initially, these smaller rooms were behind one another – the room serving the western cottage (Priddle Cottage) behind the room of the eastern cottage (Woodbine Cottage). Currently, both unheated rooms belong to Woodbine Cottage. Direct entry to each cottage is towards the outer end of its main heated room. Priddle Cottage also incorporates a 19th-century former store on its left end, and retains an original winder stair alongside the fireplace. Woodbine Cottage has a secondary stair built up the back wall.

The cottages are two storeys high. The front of the cottages, which was once symmetrical with four windows, now features 19th and 20th-century replacement casement windows with glazing bars; a fifth first-floor window on the right would have restored the original symmetry. The front doors are located at either end. The door to Woodbine Cottage is a 20th-century part-glazed door with a matching semi-conical hood. The door to Priddle Cottage is a 20th-century plank door set within a gabled porch with a felt-covered roof. A further gable-ended wing, with a plank door leading to a woodshed and a casement window above, has been added.

Inside, both main rooms feature crossbeams. The crossbeam in Priddle Cottage is undoubtedly original, displaying deep soffit chamfers. The crossbeam in Woodbine Cottage has a shallower soffit chamfer with run-out stops and may be a replacement. Both fireplaces are now blocked by later grates. The roof structure is only visible in Woodbine Cottage, and consists of side-pegged jointed crucks with pegged lap-jointed collars. The joinery and decorative details date to the 19th and 20th centuries. Woodbine Cottage and Priddle Cottage are a pair of small 17th-century cottages exhibiting interesting plan forms.
