Description
Diamond Cottage is a house from the mid-19th century, possibly with an earlier core. It has thick plastered walls that may be cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or brick stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and a tile roof that was formerly thatch. The cottage has a two-room plan and faces south, set back from the street. There is a central staircase, with the left (western) room featuring a rear lateral stack and the right room having an end stack. Integral service outshots extend across the back. The main block is two storeys high and has a regular but not symmetrical four-window front, all of which are mid-19th-century three-light casements with diamond patterns of glazing bars. The doorway is located to the right of centre and features a 19th-century panelled door, with the larger top panel glazed with margin panes. There is a contemporary porch with ornate timber trelliswork, now topped with a hipped felt roof. The main roof is gable-ended. Rose Cottage overlaps the right (western) end of the front, and if it were not there, Diamond Cottage would likely have a symmetrical five-window front. The rear roof extends continuously over the outshots. Inside, no carpentry detail is visible on the ground floor, but the joinery and other features are consistently mid-19th century. The roof has not been inspected. Diamond Cottage is part of a charming group of listed buildings.
