Description

Colyton Cottage is a house dating to around the 17th century, with an 18th-century wing creating an L-shaped layout. The construction combines plastered cob and stone rubble with a thatched roof featuring gabled and half-hipped ends. The 17th-century wing, facing Queen's Square, has three window bays, now containing modern three-light casement windows with leaded panes. A small window is located under the eaves to the right. The central doorway is framed by panelled pilasters and a pediment supported by console brackets, with a modern door. Central and end chimney stacks are present. The 18th-century wing, facing Sidmouth Road, has three bays and a modillion eaves cornice. It features sash windows with glazing bars, a doorcase with panelled pilasters and reveals, a broken pediment on console brackets, a rectangular fanlight, and a fielded panel door. A brick chimney stack is at the end of this wing. A stone stack marks the junction of the two wings. The rear of the property is gabled at the angle created by the wings, showcasing a glazed door with side lights, a rectangular traceried fanlight, and an elliptical hood. Inside, an 18th-century staircase has moulded balusters, a column newel, a moulded handrail, and a fielded panel dado. A plaque on the front of the building indicates the date 1610.
