Description
The Old Courthouse, also known as Ye Old Courthouse, is a pair of houses that are believed to have formerly served as a courthouse. Dating from around the 17th century, the buildings were remodeled in the 18th century. They feature a plastered timber-frame construction with a thatched roof that has both hipped and gabled ends, along with a heavy moulded and dentilled cornice along the eaves. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays. It has tripartite sash windows with glazing bars and two doorcases adorned with fluted pilasters, panelled reveals, and glazed and panelled doors. The right-hand doorcase has an entablature, while the left-hand one is topped with a pedimented hood. There is a small late 19th-century shopfront at the center, which includes glazed double doors. The building is also equipped with brick chimney stacks at the ridge and ends. Inside, the rear room features 18th-century fielded panelling, and there is an 18th-century dog-leg staircase with moulded balusters, panelled newels, and a fielded panel dado. The chimneypiece includes festoons in the frieze and console brackets.
