Description

This building, located at 48 High Street, is a narrow-fronted commercial premises with residential accommodation above. It has three storeys and was originally a terraced house, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later remodelling from the late 19th century or early 20th century to its façade.

The exterior features a stucco-faced front elevation beneath a slate roof. The ground floor has a modern shop front, while the first floor includes a bay window with a timber mullion and transom window above. There is also a timber dormer in the roof pitch. The façade is plain and narrow, topped by a simple parapet. The first floor bay window has a dentil cornice, and the second floor has a simple mullioned and transom window. A modest timber dormer is set in the roof pitch behind the parapet.

Inside, the ground floor shop has been entirely modernised, although a chimney-breast remains on the north face of the party wall. The upper floors have not been inspected.

Historically, this building was a modest dwelling situated in the heart of Sidmouth's historic core. It has since been adapted for commercial use to meet the needs of the growing resort town, which is one of the most significant Regency resort towns in southern England.
