Description

Jarvishayes Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with later additions and alterations, located in Broadclyst. The building features cob construction with a stone plinth, rendered under a gabled slate roof. It has a three-room, through-passage plan with two rear wings used for barns and storage, and it stands two storeys tall.

The front of the farmhouse has a range of three windows, all of which are two- and three-light windows with timber casements that were renewed in the 19th century. There is a large external stack that formerly heated the hall and an internal stack that heated the kitchen on the right, both with brick shafts. The rear of the farmhouse has a higher end that extends slightly under a catslide roof, with two-light casement windows on the first floor and a brick and slate-roofed lean-to below. The rear wings have slate gabled-end roofs and are constructed with sandstone rubble and cob infilling, featuring 19th-century loft openings and doors.

A freestanding barn, similar in style, may retain some older features. Inside, the lower end of the farmhouse has two coarsely chamfered beams and a large fireplace that is now obscured. The screens to the passage may still exist behind the current walling material. The hall features intersecting beams and an obscured fireplace that retains a smoking chamber, along with a rear newel from the hall. The roof has four jointed crucks visible in the upper rooms, with those above the hall featuring chamfered collars, all with side-pegging and morticed joints; some wind braces are intact or partially preserved.
