Description
Whites Farmhouse is a farmhouse with a core dating from the 17th century, featuring alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, topped with a slate roof that has gabled ends, and includes a projecting stack at the left end along with two axial stacks.
The original layout likely consisted of three rooms with a cross passage, where the hall stack backed onto the passage. A gabled projection at the front of the hall may have housed the staircase or served as a bay for the hall window. At the rear, there is a single-storey cob lean-to, which is probably an 18th-century addition for service rooms. The house has been remodeled and extended on either side of the hall. The current entrance, located to the right of the hall stack, leads directly into a stair hall. The lower end of the house features one heated room and a small unheated storage room that originally had separate access from outside. At the inner end of the hall, there are now two rooms: a former pantry immediately to the left and a heated parlour at the left end of the range, accessible via a passage behind the pantry. The eaves have been raised, and the original thatched roof has been replaced with asbestos slates.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a long asymmetrical front with five windows. There is a small gabled projection towards the center and a 20th-century single-storey glazed lean-to on the right. The front door is positioned immediately to the right of the central axial stack, likely where the former through passage doorway was located. The windows are late 19th-century, featuring two- and three-light casements with glazing bars.
Inside, the hall fireplace has been partly blocked in the early 20th century, with earlier jambs and a lintel said to be concealed behind it. The ceiling beams are plastered over china cupboards in both the hall and parlour. The staircase, dating from the late 19th century, has turned balusters, and modern roof trusses have been added. Whites Farmhouse is one of three farms located in a hamlet that resembles a Cornish townsplace.
