Description

A row of six cottages, built in the mid-19th century. The cottages are constructed of cob with a stone plinth, rendered externally, and have thatched roofs. They are situated on a sloped site with three changes in roof ridge level, and appear to have been added incrementally on a site on the edge of the common, rather than being built as a single uniform block. The cottages are two storeys high throughout. Each cottage has a back stack, except for numbers 4 and 5, which share a central axial stack. All except number 2 have porches; number 4 has a thatched porch, while the others are glazed or boarded. The casement windows are largely 20th century replacements, with the exception of number 2, which is the most original. Number 2 retains a wide doorway and, to its right, a late 18th-century three-light leaded timber casement window with eight panes to each light. One first-floor window has an original timber frame and a single-light 20th-century replacement marks the stair. The ground-floor room at the right has a rear fireplace with a wooden lintel, stone jambs, and a back. The staircase retains many of its original risers, treads, and part of the string. The upper storey floorboards are wide, and the two rooms upstairs are divided by a post-and-plaster partition. The roof structure dates from the mid-19th century and includes collars. The interior of number 2 was the only space inspected.
