Description

Rydon Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, which has been significantly altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of roughcast cob on brick footings and features a gabled-end synthetic slate roof. The right-hand end of the building has been rebuilt in brick. Originally, it had a three-room through-passage plan, with the service end (rebuilt in the 19th century) located to the right of the passage. The passage has been widened to create a heated entrance hall, which now contains the main staircase. A 19th-century front wing has been added to the inner room.

The farmhouse has an external rear lateral stack with slated offsets and a 18th-century imported brick shaft that heats the hall. The windows on the first floor are 19th-century 2- and 3-light casements, with eight panes per light. On the ground floor, there is one 3-light and three 2-light casement windows. The entrance to the passage features a porch with a hipped roof and a half-glazed door. The wing includes leantos and 2-light casement windows. The rear of the building has one single light and two 2-light casement windows.

Inside, there are two chamfered cross ceiling beams with scroll stops in the hall, although the hall fireplace has been removed. The roof was completely rebuilt in 1915.
