Description
Oakhayes is a large detached house, now divided into separate units, built around 1830 for Reverend Francis Filmer of Cwmdale, near Canterbury. The land was made available in 1829, and Oakhayes first appears in the Land Tax Assessments in 1832. The house is constructed of brick, which is either whitewashed or plastered, and features hipped slate roofs. Its layout consists of three parallel ranges, each with its own roof, with the main rooms located at the garden end of the ranges and on either side of the entrance. A late 19th-century wing was added to the northeast.
The entrance front, facing west, is symmetrical with three windows, all featuring 12-pane hornless sash windows. The central porch has two Tuscan columns and a moulded entablature that is open to the front, with a panelled ceiling. The doorway has a reeded architrave and a half-glazed door with a rectangular fanlight. The garden front, facing south, is also symmetrical with a configuration of one bay, three bays, and one bay, where the central bays form a polygonal projection. Most windows on this front are 12-pane hornless sashes, except for the ground floor of the projection, which has a French window flanked by two-pane horned sash windows. Some first-floor windows have blind housings, and there are hornless sash windows at the rear. A small contemporary conservatory with a central area and side aisles is attached to the rear, reflecting the original owner's enthusiasm for gardening. The interior has not been inspected.
