Description
The Woodbury War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of rough-hewn granite and is prominently located on the village green, southeast of the Church of St Swithun, which is a Grade I listed building, and its Grade II listed lychgate.
The memorial features a tall Latin cross made of rough-hewn granite, which stands on a trapezoidal plinth that is set atop a three-stepped octagonal base. The main inscription is located on the front face of the plinth, crafted in leaded lettering, and reads: "I STAND/ TO THE PROUD AND GLORIOUS/ MEMORY/ OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ THROUGH SACRIFICE, TO VICTORY AND LIFE." The names, ranks, and initials of the First World War fallen are listed in two columns on each of the two side faces of the plinth.
On the upper face of the top step of the base, there is an additional inscription that reads "1939 – 1945," with the ranks, surnames, and initials of the Second World War fallen recorded in two lists on either side of the plinth.
