Description
No. 1 Thorne's Cottages is a detached cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings, with a brick end wall on the left side, and features a thatched roof that is gabled at the left end and half-hipped on the right. The cottage has a two-room, single-depth plan and was formerly part of a row of cottages that has since been demolished. The right-hand room is heated by an internal rear lateral stack, and there is a newel stair built into the thickness of the rear wall next to the stack. The building stands two storeys tall.
The front of the cottage has an irregular two-window arrangement. On the first floor, there are two 2-light casement windows, one of which is from the late 19th century, both having lintels at eaves level. The ground floor features a blocked central door and three 20th-century casement windows. There is a late 20th-century lean-to extension at the right-hand end, with a window above it.
Inside, there is one boxed cross ceiling beam, but the roof space is inaccessible. The cottage is situated in an important location opposite The Green and forms an attractive group with Nos. 2-7 Thorne's Cottages.
