Description

Numbers 2, 3, and 4 Thorne's Cottages are a row of three cottages dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed with roughcast cob on stone footings, with some brick patching, and have gabled ends with asbestos and slate roofs. Originally, the cottages had a two-room, single-depth plan, heated by axial brick chimney shafts which were plastered. Number 1 is larger than the others and incorporates a former barn at its right-hand end. The cottages are two storeys high.

The front elevation primarily features 19th-century casement windows; six first-floor windows are from the early 19th century, with eight panes per light, and six similar ground-floor windows, some of which have been replaced. Number 4 retains sections of two late 17th or early 18th century chamfered window surrounds. Two front doors, serving numbers 3 and 4, have simple canopies supported by struts. The rear elevation features smaller 19th and 20th-century casement windows set within the original openings.

The interior of number 4 was inspected and contains a deeply chamfered cross ceiling beam with a roughly cut run-out stop.
