Description
This is a substantial detached house built between 1860 and 1861 by William Phillips, a local builder of Woodbury. It was originally constructed to serve as the Woodbury Sessions Magistrates Court, along with a policeman’s residence and a cell. The building is of red brick with yellow brick quoins and dressings, set upon a chamfered limestone plinth, and has a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves. It is a rectangular block with a double-depth plan.
The front elevation has a symmetrical design with five window bays. The first floor features 12-pane hornless sash windows, while the ground floor has round-headed 12-pane hornless sash windows. A central round-headed doorway is topped with a semicircular fanlight, and features a panelled door. The south front (left-hand side) displays an irregular pattern of windows, with 12- and 8-pane sash windows on the first floor, and a 20th-century metal casement window. A small ground floor window, positioned high under a segmental arch, likely lit the former cell. The north front has one 12-pane hornless sash window to the first floor, and a sash window below, with a three-over-six pane configuration. The rear elevation is also of irregular fenestration, with 12-pane hornless sash windows to the first floor, and 20th-century windows on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected.
