Description
Higher Venmoor Farmhouse is a former farmhouse with an attached barn at the rear, dating from the early 17th century with later alterations. The building is constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings and features a gabled-end corrugated iron roof. Originally, it had a three-room, through-passage plan with the service end located to the left of the passage. It has internal end stacks, with a rear stack to the hall that emerges through the slope of the roof, all featuring brick shafts.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a front elevation with a range of four windows, including three windows on the ground floor, all fitted with 12-pane hornless sashes. The entrance features a panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, surrounded by a scratch-moulded doorway and topped with a simple canopy supported by console brackets. The rear service end wing has three 2-light 19th-century casement windows facing the roadside.
The barn includes three base jointed crucks that are morticed and pegged at the apex, with threaded purlins, although it has undergone significant repairs, including the replacement of collars. There is a lath and plaster partition separating the barn from the rear wing. The interior of the house has not been inspected, but a visible ceiling beam in the inner room shows ovolo-moulding and two fillets. Access to the barn is through an early 17th-century doorway featuring a cranked chamfered lintel, mitred and pegged into chamfered jambs, which have step stops.
