Description
The Old Bakery is a house and bakery located on the south side of Fore Street in Otterton. It appears that the house was originally two cottages, with the bakery added later. The building likely dates from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. It features plastered stone rubble and/or cob construction, with brick or stone rubble stacks topped with brick, one of which has Rolle Estate chimney pots. The roof is thatched, while the bakery has a corrugated asbestos roof.
Originally, the structure consisted of a pair of two-room cottages built end onto the street and facing east-north-east. The left cottage has an axial stack between the rooms, while the right cottage has a projecting rear lateral stack nearest the road. The bakery projects at a right angle from the rear of the left cottage and includes an outer lateral stack on the northern side. The building is two storeys high and has an irregular five-window front, featuring late 19th-century and 20th-century casements. The left cottage has three windows with a doorway on the right end, and the right cottage has two windows with a central doorway. Both cottages have late 19th-century doors with contemporary slate-roofed and gabled hoods. The roof is hipped on the left side and gable-ended on the right. The right end has a similar casement window on each floor. The bakery is gable-ended. The interior has not been inspected. The Old Bakery is part of a group of attractive listed buildings along Fore Street in Otterton.
