Description

The Old Bakery and attached bakehouse is a house that was formerly cottages and a baker's shop, with origins dating back to the 16th century. It was raised and had a shop added in the early 19th century, with the bakery itself being built in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed ironstone rubble, with gable ends featuring raised crucks and large framing filled with lath and plaster. The structure has been raised and extended in red brick, which is colour-washed at the front, and includes a brick dentil cornice on the addition. The roofs are made of corrugated iron, with the main range having 19th-century brick end stacks. The layout is L-shaped, extended to a T-shape with a wing at the rear.

The building is two storeys high, with a two-window main range and a one-window addition at a lower level on the left. There is a central 20th-century plank door and a blocked doorway, while the addition features a 19th-century plank door. Throughout the building, there are three-light casements with glazing bars. The main range has painted wood lintels on the ground floor, and the addition has a 20th-century casement with a large painted wood lintel on the ground floor, along with an old casement above. The rear of the building is irregular.

Inside, the room on the left has an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and remnants of a bread oven. The ground floor features two ogee stop-chamfered ceiling beams, old three-plank doors with L- and strap hinges, and two old quarter turn staircases with winders. There are stud partitions and an old stud and plank half-height partition, along with a through purlin roof. The bakery is attached to the rear wing, which is made of brick and has a tiled roof and brick stack, along with a plank door and casement. The interior of the bakery includes a large bread oven.
