Description

Brooklyn Cottage is a cottage from the second half of the 17th century that has been modernised in the 19th century and again around 1970. It features plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or cob stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The cottage has a thatched roof and is designed in a U-plan layout. The main block faces south-south-east onto Fore Street, with short rear blocks projecting at right angles behind each end. The right (eastern) rear block is likely secondary.

The main block has a two-room plan with a central through passage, which now contains 20th-century stairs. The right room has a gable end stack, while the left room has an axial stack that backs onto the passage. The cottage is two storeys high with an irregular three-window front featuring 20th-century replacement casements with glazing bars. The front passage doorway is located left of centre and has a 20th-century panelled door beneath the pediment of a 19th-century doorcase. The roof is gable-ended to the right and hipped to the left, with both rear blocks also gable-ended, and the rear includes casements similar to those on the front.

The interior largely reflects the 19th and 20th-century modernisations, but some original features remain exposed. The left front room crossbeam and the left rear room axial beam both have neat soffit chamfers, though they are unstopped. The only visible truss is over the right room, which is plastered over but indicates a jointed cruck truss shape. The fireplaces in the cottage are blocked. Brooklyn Cottage is part of a group of attractive listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street.
