Description
The house, likely dating from the 16th or 17th century, was extensively refurbished in 1974. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with one stack of plastered stone rubble and another of 19th-century brick, both topped with 19th-century brick chimney shafts. The roof is thatched. The cottage has a 2-room plan, facing south-south-east, and is set back a short distance from Fore Street. The right (eastern) room features a projecting brick gable-end stack, while the left room has a large projecting front lateral stack. It appears to be the former hall and right-end inner room of what was originally a 3-room-and-through-passage house. The hall may incorporate the site of the former passage, but the original screen has been removed. The service room end has been separated and rebuilt as the adjoining Milson Cottage. The cottage is two stories high, with an irregular 3-window front featuring 1974 casement windows with glazing bars, some of which extend slightly into the eaves. The left-hand stack projects centrally and includes a small fire window. A 1974 porch has been built across the corner with Milson Cottage, sheltering a panelled door and full-height side light; the porch has a thatched monopitch roof. The interior is largely a result of the 1974 refurbishment. The sole original feature is an apparently 17th-century soffit-chamfered spine beam with run-out stops. The hall fireplace was rebuilt in 1974, and the owner reports that the roof structure was replaced at the same time. Santasu Cottage is one of a group of attractive listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street.
