Description

SX 99 NE BROADCLYST COLUMBJOHN

5/81 Barn 150 metres west of - Columbjohn Farmhouse

GV II

Barn. Possibly C16 in part with C19 partial rebuilding and reroofing. Random volcanic trap rubble with dry slate roof, gabled-end to left-hand side, half hipped to right. The barn stands opposite the ruined gatehouse of Columbjohn Mansion (q.v.), and the lower courses of masonry may be C16. Front: Wagon porch to right with pair of plank doors opposed by similar rear entrance, with a large single-light round-headed double-chamfered opening to the left, perhaps of the 1840s. Later C19 roof (principals with king post, tie beam and diagonal struts). The front wall continues to left.
