Description
This is a late 16th-century barn located at the north west corner of the farmyard at Poxwell Manor Farm. The barn features squared rubble walls and a clay tile roof with stone slates at the eaves. Both the north and south ends are gabled, adorned with plain copings and finials. The west porch has a hipped roof, while the larger east porch is two storeys high and gabled.
On the west wall, there is a blocked doorway with chamfered jambs and a four-centred head. The south end wall includes a small window with two centred lights set in a rectangular recess, topped by a quatrefoil with sunk spandrels, all carved from a single stone, likely reused from an earlier 16th-century building.
Inside, the roof is supported by five trusses. Four of these are of the jointed raised cruck type, with the lower parts of the cruck blades resting on short timber lengths built into the walls. The fifth truss is constructed in two tiers; the main jointed crucks do not extend to the apex but are continued by secondary crucks that stand on a collar. The dates 1772 and 1773 scratched into the stonework may indicate when repairs to the roof were made.
