Description
The Rewe and Netherexe War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921. It incorporates a shouldered medieval cross base believed to date back to the 15th century. The memorial is made of smooth-dressed granite and is located on a small triangular traffic island surrounded by a timber post and linked chain boundary at Rewe crossroads, where Green Lane meets the A396.
The structure features an early 20th-century granite cross that is set into the socketed base of the former medieval cross. This base is supported by an early 20th-century two-stage granite plinth, with the lower step being octagonal in shape and the upper step, which carries the memorial inscriptions, being square.
The medieval socketed stone has a square base with corner shoulders, transitioning to an octagonal shape above. The cross shaft rises from this medieval stone to the cross head, starting as a rectangular shape with pointed stops, and features chamfered angles above. The shaft is slightly tapered, and the cross arms are chamfered and slightly splayed, with the top arm being longer than the side arms.
The inscriptions on the upper step of the plinth read: on the front, "THIS ANCIENT CROSS WAS RESTORED IN MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO DIED FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY 1914-1919." On the right, "NETHEREXE / (NAMES)." On the back, "THANKS BE TO GOD WHICH GIVETH US THE VICTORY / THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST." On the left, "REWE / (NAMES)."
