Description
Paddleford Bridge is a bridge over the River Culm, dating from around 1700. It is constructed of volcanic trap ashlar and features two segmental arches, one large and one small, both of which are double-chamfered on both sides. The small arch retains its original soffits, while the larger arch has a rebuilt soffit designed as a brick skew arch. The bridge has pointed cutwaters on both sides that create refuges at road level. It also includes a chamfered string-course and chamfered coping on the parapet walls, which angle out at either end to serve as revetments. This bridge is a good, albeit late, example of the typical 17th-century Devon style.
