Description
Barnhayes is an 18th-century house located in Huxham. The construction combines cob and stone, set on a stone plinth, and is rendered with a hipped wheat reed thatched roof. A brick stack is located at the right-hand end of the exterior, and a rear lateral stack, now internal, is also present. The house follows a double-depth plan and incorporates later rear leantos. It is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-window front. A central gabled timber porch with a thatched roof is a prominent feature. The upper windows have lintels level with the eaves, and all windows have exposed sash boxes, with two 19th-century two-pane, timber, horned sashes. A rear ground-floor window, originally a two-light design (now internal within a leanto), has shallow, chamfered jambs and a mullion. On the first floor, a two-light window remains with glazing bars and leaded panes, along with a three-light window where the outer lights have glazing bars but lack leaded panes. Internally, the house has mid-19th-century panelled doors and a good 18th-century four-bay roof, with collars and tie-beams, side-pegged and halved. The apex is crossed and side-pegged and halved.
