Description
Lilyvale is a house dating to the 17th century, and possibly earlier, with later alterations. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth, rendered under a wheat reed thatched roof, half-hipped to the right-hand end and gabled to the left. Originally, the house likely had a three-room, cross-passage plan, featuring an axial stack backing onto the passage and a lower-end stack on the left-hand side, both with brick shafts. The house has two storeys. The front elevation has a four-window range. Upper-floor windows are all under eyebrow eaves; those to the left are three-light windows with glazing bars, while those to the right are two-light windows with one large pane in each light. A two-light barred window is situated to the left of an open timberwork porch with a concrete tiled roof, and two unbarred two-light windows are on the right. All casements are timber, dating to the 19th and 20th centuries, though the three-light window above the porch may be 17th century. Inside the left-hand room, a cross beam with studs is visible (without infilling), and the right-hand room has two chamfered axial beams. The house may retain an early roof. The interior was not inspected. The group value of this building lies in its representation of regional vernacular architecture and its historical significance.
