Description

Hill's is a house dating from around 1800, with early to mid 19th century enlargements. The part of the building closest to the road is the oldest section. It is two storeys high and has a rough cast exterior. The roof is gable-ended and covered with slate, featuring ornamental bargeboards that were added during the enlargements. The front of the house has three symmetrical windows, with recessed sashes on the first floor that do not have glazing bars, and 19th century two-light casements on the ground floor.

The central entrance is framed by an impressive doorcase that includes thin pilasters set over broader ones, with dogtooth decoration on the caps, dosserets, and triglyphs above supporting an open pediment. The door itself is recessed and consists of four fielded panels and two flush panels, with panelled reveals and soffit. Above the door is a delicate leaded fanlight, which features a semi-circle inscribed in a rectangle with swagged radii and fans at the corners.

The 19th century two-storey extension is set back from the main block and has paired sashes with marginal glazing. Attached to this extension is a conservatory with a bowed end, which has two-light windows and a glazed roof topped with a finial at the ridge over the curved section.

At the rear, facing a yard towards Hill's Cottage, there are four sash windows with intact glazing bars and a tall central stair light in the old block. The 19th century extension also features four paired sashes on this elevation. Hill's and Hill's Cottage are part of a group.
