Vallance'S Sidmouth Brewery

Vallance's Sidmouth Brewery is a building located at No. 23 Temple Street, dating from 1832 and later. It occupies a corner site with Brewery Lane. The original brewery buildings are constructed of painted cob and brick, standing three storeys tall with rounded corners, brick buttress piers, and iron banding along Brewery Lane. Some windows are blocked, while others feature 2-light casements. The roof is a low pitch hipped slate.

The offices and shop facing Temple Street are likely of the same date or slightly later, built over two storeys with a stucco finish on a plinth. There are three windows on both floors, with heightened recessed sashes and intact glazing bars on the first floor, along with block sills. The central door consists of five flush panels, one of which is glazed, with panelled reveals and soffit, and a surround featuring a moulded edge panel above and a cornice. To the right, there is another door with four moulded panels and a narrow blind rectangular fanlight.

To the north, there is a mid-19th century extension, also two storeys, made of painted brick with a bargeboard gable facing the street. Each floor features one large segmental arched 2-light casement. At the rear, forming the west side of the yard, are later 19th century brewery buildings consisting of two tall narrow red brick blocks with shaped hipped roofs and a two-storey link block between them. The tall blocks have two segment-headed windows, with one block featuring a lunette below the eaves, and louvred windows with glazing bars.
